The Acupuncture Afterglow: What Happens in Your Brain and Nervous System

Have you ever gotten off the acupuncture table feeling deeply relaxed, unusually clear-headed, or even a little euphoric? There is real physiology behind that “acupuncture afterglow.”

Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves that communicate with the spinal cord and brain, influencing areas involved in pain, stress, mood, and autonomic regulation. One result can be a shift away from the body’s more activated sympathetic state and toward the parasympathetic state associated with rest, digestion, recovery, and repair.

Acupuncture also interacts with several of the body’s own neurochemical systems:

  • Serotonin — involved in mood, sleep, pain regulation, and well-being
  • Dopamine — involved in reward, motivation, attention, and pleasure
  • Oxytocin — associated with calm, connection, stress regulation, and pain modulation
  • Endorphins — the body’s own opioid compounds that help regulate pain
  • Anandamide — an endocannabinoid whose name comes from the Sanskrit ānanda, meaning “bliss,” involved in mood, pain, stress, and homeostasis

This is what I mean when I talk about a “nervous system reset.” It isn’t a literal reset button. It is a shift in how the nervous system is processing stress, pain, and sensory information.

The needles are simply the stimulus. The neurological and physiological response they create is where acupuncture gets really interesting.

And that calm, floaty, blissful feeling afterward? That isn’t just a feeling—there’s real neurobiology behind it.
